Two creators both decide to build an online course. Same rough idea, similar expertise, roughly equal motivation.
Creator A spends her first month planning. She maps out a 14-module curriculum, hires a designer for the cover graphics, and researches the best platform for delivery. By month two, she's recording. By month four, she's editing. By month six, she's nearly ready to launch, but the landing page isn't finished and she wants to add a bonus module first.
Creator B builds a four-lesson workshop in three weeks. The slides are functional, the workbook is a simple PDF, and the platform is nothing fancy. He charges $49, sends an email to his list, gets 22 buyers, and watches what happens. By month two, he's on version two based on what those 22 people told him. By month six, he has paying customers, real data, and a product that keeps improving with each round of feedback.
They started with the same idea. One of them has a product people are actually using.
Why product creation is a thinking problem, not a production problem
Creating a product sounds technical until you realize the tools are largely solved. You can build a course on a dozen platforms, set up a payment page in an afternoon, and host a PDF anywhere for pennies. The hard part comes before production: figuring out what to build, for whom, and why someone would pay for it.
A product creation system is fundamentally a decision-making framework. You're working through questions: who is this for, what problem does it solve, and what makes it different from what already exists. Answer those questions well and you have a foundation worth building on. Answer them badly and no amount of polished production will fix the underlying problem.
This is true regardless of what kind of product you're building. Whether you're creating a $29 template pack, a $200 online course, or a $5,000 consulting package, the strategic questions are the same. Who wants this? Why? Why from you specifically? The format changes, but the thinking process doesn't.
Products fail most often at the foundation, even when the failure only becomes visible later. An ill-defined product with a vague audience and an unclear value proposition doesn't get rescued by good design or clever marketing. The failures just happen further down the road and cost more by the time they surface.
The product you've been planning for six months is probably wrong
Planning feels like progress. You sketch out modules, write a description, imagine the customer journey. After enough planning, the product feels real in your head even before a single person has paid for it or used it. The problem is that you're planning based on assumptions, and a lot of those assumptions will turn out to be wrong.
Questions like which features actually matter, what pricing makes sense, and which promises resonate in a sales conversation can only be answered by real buyers using a real product. All the planning in the world can't substitute for someone clicking "buy" and then actually using what you made.
You still need to make the foundational decisions: who is this for, what problem does it solve, and what does the core experience look like. But there's a point where additional planning adds more assumptions than it removes. The longer you plan without launching, the more your product reflects your theory of what buyers want rather than what buyers actually do.
What "minimum viable" actually means in practice
"Minimum viable product" has been repeated so often it's starting to lose meaning. The "minimum" part gets people thinking "half-finished," which misses the point. "Viable" means the product has to actually work and deliver on its promise. Strip away the buzzword and the principle is straightforward: build the smallest version that delivers the core outcome, sell it to a small group, and iterate based on what you learn.
For a course creator, that might mean a five-lesson live workshop before it becomes a recorded course. For a consultant, it might mean a fixed-scope project before it becomes a productized service. For someone building a software tool, it might mean a spreadsheet template before it becomes an app. The form varies, but the logic holds across all of them.
Your first version has to deliver on its core promise. If it doesn't, you'll get refunds and negative reviews instead of feedback you can build on. The goal is to launch something imperfect, not something broken. There's a real difference between "this could be better" and "this doesn't do what it says it will."
Speed as a competitive advantage nobody talks about
You couldn't have built version three first, because you needed the real-world feedback from versions one and two to understand what version three should be.
Go back to the six-month comparison. Creator A is still finishing her landing page. Creator B has 22 customers, knows which lesson got the most praise, knows which exercise nobody completed, and is two weeks into building version two.
By month twelve, Creator A will have launched once. Creator B will have launched three times. Each version is better than the last because it's built on actual customer behavior instead of assumptions. The gap between them keeps widening simply because he started collecting real data earlier.
Speed also changes the emotional dynamics of launching. A course you've spent eight months building becomes a significant part of your identity. Launching it feels like a judgment on your competence, and that weight makes you hesitate, over-refine, and postpone. A workshop you built in three weekends is an experiment, and experiments are allowed to be imperfect. You'll actually ship it.
Lower emotional stakes lead to better products, too. When you're not over-invested in version one, you can hear critical feedback without getting defensive. You can change things that aren't working without feeling like you're dismantling something important. You stay curious about what could be better rather than protective of what already is.
How products actually improve: the three-version path
If you look at products that have been around for a few years and are still selling well, they almost never look like they did at launch. The pricing changed, the structure changed, the marketing message shifted. Sometimes the entire audience evolved. This is not accidental. It's the result of creators paying attention to what their buyers actually do with the product.
Version one of your product teaches you what people actually want. You'll discover which outcomes matter to your buyers, which parts of your process they struggle with, and which pieces of your expertise they value most. This is information you can only get by launching something real and paying attention to how people use it.
Version two teaches you how to deliver the outcome efficiently. You've cut the modules nobody finished, added the support people asked for, and tightened the structure based on where buyers got stuck. The product is starting to match the reality of how people learn or work, rather than the theory you had about how they would.
Version three is the product you wish you'd built from the start. It exists because versions one and two showed you what "from the start" should have looked like. You couldn't have built version three first, because you needed the real-world feedback from versions one and two to understand what version three should be.
The three-version path isn't guaranteed, and not every product takes exactly three rounds. Some need more, some fewer. The point is that the first version is a hypothesis. Launching begins the real test of whether your assumptions hold up against actual buyer behavior. The product improves from there.
What a product creation system actually gives you
Calling it a "system" suggests something orderly, maybe even automated. The reality is more useful than that. A product creation system is a set of decisions you make in the right order so that each decision informs the next and you don't spend six months building something nobody wants.
That means starting with the audience before you think about content structure. Who has a problem you can solve? What outcome do they want? Only after you've answered those questions does it make sense to design the product, because the structure should serve the outcome rather than organize your knowledge.
It means scoping aggressively. Every feature you add to version one is a feature that delays your launch and delays your first real data. The right question is: what's the minimum that delivers the promised outcome? Everything else goes on the version-two list.
And it means building the feedback loop before you need it. Know how you'll find out what's working and what isn't. That could mean customer surveys, a community where buyers talk to each other, or simply paying attention to what questions come up repeatedly in support emails. The data is always there. The question is whether you're collecting it.
